Atlantis Space Shuttle Carries MPE Signatures into Space
June 8, 2007
The Atlantis Space Shuttle launched June 8 and carried MPE student, parent, and staff signatures into space!!
The STS-117 crew began its mission June 8 and arrived at the space station June 10. They took part in a space walk and quickly began work on the Space Station by adding the Starboard truss structure to the outpost and a new set of solar arrays that increases station power-generation capabilities.
Mission Fact Sheet
The signatures that went on the June 2007 mission were compiled on Space Day at Mountain Park Elementary on May 4, 2006.
Student Signatures in Space provides elementary and middle school students the opportunity to send their digitized signatures into space and feel a personal involvement with the crew and the mission.
The Atlantis Shuttle Mission was chosen to take the signatures. After the signatures return from space, the poster will be returned to Mountain Park Elementary School along with a flight certificate and picture of the crew that carried the signatures into space. Since the program began in 1997, more than 2.75 million student signatures have flown in space.
Because of space constraints on each mission, participation is limited to approximately 500 schools each year. Schools are limited to participating once every six years.
As part of the Student Signatures in Space program (see www.SpaceDay.org) the following schools will have their students’ signatures flown aboard Space Shuttle mission STS-117.
