The Accelerated
Reader program is a computerized program that tests reading comprehension.
Students select books on their reading level, read independently or with a
buddy, and take an independent comprehension test on the computer. Each book
is worth a certain number of points based on its length and reading level.
Students get a percentage of these points based on how many of the test
questions they get right. The program tracks their progress over the course
of the school year.

The
Birthday Book Club
The Birthday Book Club (BBC) was created several years ago as a fun way to celebrate our
children’s birthdays while helping to improve the quality of reading
materials in our Media Center. For a membership
fee of $15 your child can join the BBC and be presented with a book of his/her choice on or around his/her
birthday. The book will include a bookplate with the child’s name and
birthday on it, and will become part of the Media Center’s book collection available for all students to
check-out. A parent must come to the Media Center, preferably 2-3 weeks prior to the child’s birthday,
and help him/her select a book from the BBC inventory. To become a member you must complete a membership form
which can be found on the MPE website (under “Media Center”), or inside the birthday box on Ms. Beeman’s desk
in the Media Center. Return the form with a check for $15 (payable to
MPE) to the Media Center. The Birthday Book Club begins in September. Children
with summer birthdays (June, July, and August) will receive their books on
their “half birthdays.”
