At the local school level, the advisory council involves representatives from all segments of the community, teachers and the principal. In 2000, the state legislature passed the A+ Education Reform Act that specifies councils "shall provide advice, recommendations, assistance, and represent the community of parents and businesses." Council members must maintain a school-wide perspective to issues and discussions at their monthly meetings. They encourage community participating in decision-making and meet five times a year.
